Today was interesting in our little town. We made the news again… We used to be the quietest little town, not much to ever happen but the last few years we seem to stay in the news. Maybe it is because we did not have social media back in the day.
This is the part of the article from the local news,
Some are calling it the greatest high school senior class prank ever.
Other hard-working educators are not laughing.
Two neighboring schools in the same school district.
So when some seniors decided to walk into their rival school and sit in class?
The Ole Switcheroo was complete.
About 12 seniors from one high school walked into another high school in the same county two days ago.
They sat in class at their rival schools for quite some time (according to one student) before they were discovered.
A student from one of the school who took part in the caper says she and others walked into the rival school when the second period bell rang.
A few students had on costumes, the student tells me.
“We walked right down the hall.”
“We sat in class for about 20 minutes.”
“When we were discovered, they took our phones, identified us all and sent a bus to come pick us up and take us back to our school.”
One parent who wishes to remain anonymous tells me:
“My daughter was suspended three days.”
A second parent who wishes to remain anonymous tells me:
“My child received a one day suspension and was told he could not take part in sports.”
A third parent who wishes to remain anonymous tells me:
“My child got three days- he will be able to suit up for sports but will not be allowed to play the rest of the season.”
“These are great kids from both schools. There was no vandalism- they made sure that the prank did not do damage to the schools.”
“Contrary to rumors, there were no scholarships taken away.”
“Still, I’m not sure the punishment fits the crime.”
Was the Ole Switcheroo the best senior class caper ever?
Or was it a selfish prank that got in the way of teachers trying to teach?
As usual, there are always two sides of a coin.
I worked in the system and I can tell you we always had senior pranks nearing the end of the school year. Most ended in vandalism.
The kids did not per take in any vandalism they just switched schools.
I am sure I dont know all the details and there is always 2 sides to every story, however I think the punishment of the kids does not fit the crime. I do think there needs to be some punishment and they need to understand actions have consequences but there needs to be a limit.
I think we need to look at the bigger picture here which is, these kids got through the halls of each others schools, stayed in class through roll call, and through saying the Pledge of Allegiance and was never recognized.
The security of the school would be my focus but that is just my opinion.
For our small business owners in the t-shirt making, well let’s just say they are about to see a sales increase for the week because the t-shirts are rolling out!
Below is a picture of a senior prank from way back when.
